What is Chessboxing?
Chessboxing is a competitive sport where two opponents alternate rounds of blitz chess and boxing until one wins by checkmate or knockout. Victory can also come by time penalty, as in traditional chess, or by a boxing decision if the chess round ends in a draw.
Events are usually held inside a boxing ring, with the chessboard, table, and chairs moved in and out between rounds. Competitors wear amateur boxing equipment and follow official boxing rules.
Like boxing, chessboxers compete in weight categories. Currently, the categories for professional events (as of October 2014) are:
Men (17+ years): up to 70 kg, 80 kg, 90 kg, over 90 kg
Women (17+ years): up to 55 kg, 65 kg, 75 kg, over 75 kg
The Spirit of Chessboxing
Chessboxing isn’t just a sport, it’s a philosophy of balance. Competitors must be sharp thinkers and fierce fighters, pushing themselves mentally and physically in equal measure.
This September in Loznica, the world will once again witness why chessboxing continues to grow as a sport unlike any other.
"Chessboxing is an endless quest for the strongest and the smartest."
