What just launched
Openings are now a full training module inside the Outpost app. In the free version, you can:
- Learn the Caro-Kann Defense - one of the most solid, positionally sound openings you can build a Black repertoire around
- Learn the London System - the "learn one setup, play it against everything" opening that's popular for good reason
- Study the basic lines - main variations explained move-by-move, not just raw PGN dumps
- Take a final test - check that you actually retained what you learned before you take it to a real game
That's already more than most beginners ever get for free anywhere.
But here's the part we're most excited about.
Meet Outposty, your AI coach for openings (and everything else)
Every position you study, every line you're unsure about, every "wait, why did I play that?" moment, Outposty is right there.
Outposty is Outpost's AI Coach, and inside the Openings section it's specialized for opening theory. You can ask it things like:
- "Why is 3.e5 the main move for White in Caro-Kann Advance?"

How to actually use this
Here's the workflow we recommend:
- Open the Outpost app (iOS, Android, or in your web browser)
- Go to Lear tab → Openings → pick either Caro-Kann or London System (or explore Pro if you want more)
- Study the main lines slowly. Don't try to memorize move 15 on day one.
- Ask Outposty every time you don't understand something. That's what it's there for. You will never annoy the AI coach.
- Take the final test to lock in what you learned.
- Play a few games with the opening on the Play tab.
- Bring the games back to AI Game Review: Outposty will walk you through where you deviated from theory and what to do about it.
That's a complete opening learning loop, in one app.
Why we built it this way
Every opening tool we've ever seen falls into one of two traps:
- "Memorize this PGN": dead content, no explanation, no interaction
- "Watch this 40-minute lecture": great video, but no way to ask questions when you're actually playing and it's too long
We wanted something different: openings you can ask questions to. That's what Outposty does. And that's why we built the Openings section around the AI coach, not around static PGN files.
