We have exciting news for all Outposters: 🎉 Outpost Chess now has an official rating system!
Whether you're a seasoned player or just starting to climb the ladder, your Outpost journey now comes with a measurable Elo rating - similar to what you’d find in official tournaments under the FIDE rating system.
But what does that actually mean? And how does your Outpost rating compare to a FIDE rating?
Let’s break it down.
💡 What Is Outpost Rating?
Every Outpost player now starts with a rating of 1200 Elo, just like many chess federations. From there, your rating goes up or down depending on your performance in 1vs1 Matches. The system behind this is based on the FIDE formula, the global standard for calculating chess skill.
Your rating depends on:
🎯 Your result (W) - Did you win, lose, or draw?
🔢 Your opponent’s rating (Rc)
⚙️ Your K value - This is a development factor that affects how fast your rating changes.
🔢 How the K Value Works
In both FIDE and Outpost, K determines how quickly your rating reacts to your results.
Here’s how it applies on Outpost (same as FIDE):
K = 40 if you're new (less than 30 games)
K = 40 if you're under 18 and rated under 2300
K = 20 if your rating is below 2400
K = 10 if your rating reaches 2400 or more and stays there
This means the more games you play, the more stable and accurate your rating becomes.
🆚 How Is This Different from FIDE?
Outpost Chess | FIDE (Official) | |
---|---|---|
Starting Rating | 1200 Elo | Typically 1000–1600, varies by region |
How to Get Rated | Play 1vs1 Matches on Outpost | Play official FIDE-rated tournaments |
Time Control | 3+0, 5+0, 10+0, 30+0 | Usually 60+ min per game (standard) |
Rating System | Based on FIDE formula | Official FIDE formula |
Requirements | Just sign up & play on Outpost! | Tournament registration & FIDE ID |
So, while FIDE requires you to travel, register, and play long-time control games in official events - Outpost gives you an easier, faster, and more flexible way to track your skill.
🔍 Why Your Rating Might Differ
Your Outpost rating may be higher or lower than your official FIDE rating. That’s completely normal. It depends on:
How often you play on Outpost
The strength of your opponents here
Your performance in this specific environment
When you challenge other players, keep in mind that their Outpost rating reflects how they perform here - not necessarily their over-the-board results.
